What is Tulsi, holy basil?

Ocimum tenuiflorum (synonym Ocimum sanctum), commonly known as holy basil, also Tulsi, is an aromatic perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is native to the Indian subcontinent, but is known all over the world. Tulsi is grown in India for religious and traditional purposes and also for its essential oil. In Ayurvedic medicine, tulsi is a rasayana, which literally means "the path to the essence" and thus promotes long life. In the Hindu religion, it literally means "incomparable" and is so useful that it is even believed to be the earthly manifestation of the goddess Tulsi.
