The Santalum album L. tree (sandalwood)

Is an indigenous species in East India, Malaysia. Up to 10 meters tall tree that blooms all year round and is not picky as to the space in which it will grow. Its wood can smell even more intense if it grows in as dry and desolate places as possible.

The large leathery leaves resemble a bay leaf. At the tops of the branches are clusters of flowers, mostly four-leafed and odorless. When they bloom, they are yellow in color and then gradually become intensely red.

Sandalwood is traditionally used for perfumes, incense and jewelry, furniture, and in India it has been used for centuries as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine because of its exceptional effects.

The sandalwood tree is found in one of the oldest Vedic writings of Hinduism, Nirukti. It was considered a divine tree used to carve and build temples, idols, religious statues, and spiritual tools; which are known to remain fragrant for decades or longer.

How do we use Mala?

Traditionally, Mala is held between the thumb and middle finger, so that each bead passes through the finger and thumb. The mantra is said either softly or aloud. The most powerful mantras are supposed to be those that quietly repeat in your mind. We do this until we reach the Guru's bead or tassels, small turns and the process continues until the Guru bead or the tassels are not reached again. Repeating the mantra in this way is a great way to calm the mind and keep the thoughts in our daily lives (whatever that may be for each of us, regardless of culture or religion).
